Stein Shows Us the Berlin Wall of Modern Science: A Closed Mind

In his first documentary, Ben Stein unveils the prejudices, insanities and outright hatreds that exist in the world of science today. Making an analogy with the Berlin Wall, Stein shows that scientists are divided into two camps on the issue of the origin of Man: those that embrace Darwinian evolution, and those that believe in the possibility of Intelligent Design. But all moneys and positions of honor go exclusively to those on the "right" side of the wall - the evolutionists - and loss of tenure, loss of job and even defamation of character await those on the "other" side - the IDers. Just as the Berlin Wall closed the world to East Berliners and deprived them of the blessings of liberty, so the halls of academia and scientific research have been closed to those who dare not to agree with the scientific status quo.

Expelled opens with black-and-white footage of the Berlin Wall being built, with the credits posted on the Wall itself. Color footage of a lecture by Stein and interviews with scientists on both sides of the issue are interwoven with black-and-white footage - usually funny - from various sources. The effect is very clever and helps emphasize the points being made. There are also two animated sections: one called "The Casino of Life," done in black-and-white and made to look like a 1950's science lesson. It shows the absolute improbability - basically 0% - of life starting on its own. And the other, in color, is of the inside of a human cell, illustrating the dramatic difference between how Darwin viewed a cell and how scientists today view one.

Stein very effectively makes the point that any scientist today who tries to buck the system and think outside the official "box" of the scientific community will be ostracized, and gives many cases to prove it. He interviews the victims of such shunnings, as well as those responsible for inflicting them. It is amazing how callous, emotionally wrought, condescending, irrational, and vindictive these "men of science" are. You can just see someone like Christopher Columbus trying to explain that the world is round to them, and being laughed out of the room.

Further into the film, Stein shows that it was a belief in Darwinian evolution that motivated Hitler to embrace eugenics and genocide, and that there were even scientists in this country that held to such barbaric beliefs. Those beliefs continue today in Planned Parenthood and the practice of abortion. Darwinists think of people in terms of biological and economic expediency, rather than that every life is precious; and therefore dehumanize societies, and even eliminate the reason for having moral laws. Evolutionist theory can be used to justify every type of inhuman behavior, making a nightmare even more horrendous than Hitler's possible today.

After that, Stein shows what is really going on behind the scenes: scientists don't hate those who believe in Intelligent Design because they are trying to think for themselves - they hate them because they believe in God. Evolutionists are almost exclusively atheists, and they hate anything having to do with religion. Stein shows that it is not a love of science that is driving these men, but their hatred of religion. This is a war of worldviews, not a war of scientific viewpoints. These men see themselves as demigods, and any other god or religion as a threat to themselves. That is the twisted world that science has become, and it is only going to get worse unless we do something about it.

Even though there is some humor in Expelled, it is predominantly a sobering film. We take a tour of one of Hitler's death facilities where 15,000 deformed or handicapped people were executed and then dissected by eugenic scientists. There are other very sobering moments. Contrasting the darkness of Darwin's theories and the lives of the men who practiced them, there is the enlightened understanding of men of vision and values, like Thomas Jefferson and Ronald Reagan. The contrast is indeed sobering.

At the end, we are treated to a speech by Reagan concerning freedom, and see the Berlin Wall coming down. References to Jefferson and others of our founding fathers make it clear that our basic freedoms are being threatened; but that, ultimately, Truth will win out since Truth cannot be destroyed. But it is up to us to get the message out to others, and to our government, that we will not be ruled by an elitist group of godless, egocentric scientists who believe that people are little more than a biology experiment.

Expelled is not a brilliant documentary. What is brilliant is that Ben Stein uncovers the heart of the controversy between Evolutionists and Intelligent Designers: it is not about science, but religion. Atheists hate with a passion anyone who believes in God. I have an atheist cousin who is constantly asking me why Christians are so obsessed with proselytizing the world. In return, I ask him why atheists are so paranoid about it. They really are, and, as scientists, they are some of the most irrational beings on the planet.

God created Man in His own image. Get the word out.
